The streams and rivers of the Haut-Allier are, even nowadays, scarcely polluted. We can still find trout that have bred in the river in the Seuge, Virlange, Ance du Sud and Panis – and freshwater mussels too. For lovers of fly-fishing, there is plenty of scope in the watercourses of the Margeride plateau, the Barrage de Poutès reservoir, and the Lac du Bouchet, a wonderful lake in a former volcanic crater.
And finally, we present the “must” of the Auvergne and the Haute-Loire, the River Allier, a magnificent and simply unmissable salmon river. Here you can also catch beautiful brown trout, grayling and other freshwater white fish.
For beginners, you can enjoy yourselves at the lake in Saugues (7 km away) as well as at the ponds of the “Etangs de Bergougnoux” where you can fish for trout, brook trout and carp.
Serge, a distinguished fly fisherman, will be able to show you the best spots to fish in the Saugues area, offer you some technical tips, advise you on getting a fishing licence…
Much of the Margeride plateau is set at an altitude of 1000 metres, and its gently rolling landscapes are ideal for walking its numerous hiking paths.
And why not enjoy a weekend snowshoeing once the snow makes an appearance?
